Monarch Butterfly Textile
from $30.00

A wonder in a world of wonders, monarchs in eastern North America fly to Mexico—a journey of up to 3,000 miles—each fall before overwintering and flying north the following spring. Along the way they’ll lay eggs and perish; their caterpillar offspring will grow up, spin coccoons, turn into butterflies, fly further north, and lay eggs, a cycle repeated several times before the final generation makes their single-flight autumn return to Mexico. And on top of that, they are beautiful.

The design is a detail from a photograph I took of a monarch in eastern Maine. It’s printed as a halftone, which uses tiny dots and a handful of colors—think Warhol silkscreens or vintage comic books—that appear as smooth gradients and a rich palette.

Available in 22” and 28” cotton voile—light but crisp, perfect as a bandana, neckerchief, headscarf, table linen, or wall art—or a 36” sheer georgette scarf made from recycled polyester.
