<image:caption>On autumn evenings you can find bumblebees sleeping on aster blossoms. For some it will be their last night; they'll spend it on a bed of pollen, their senses and perhaps even their dreams—for bumblebees do dream—suffused with its scent and taste.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Photography - Old Field in Autumn, Bangor</image:title>
<image:caption>In a society that venerates forests, fields don’t get much attention. They’re often seen as unkempt if left unmowed, as having “gone to seed” even though seeds are the stuff of life. But old fields are special habitats—and they’re beautiful, too.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Why are painted turtles colored like they are? Perhaps to attract mates, or because the stripes make it easier for them to see one another in cloudy water. Nobody knows for sure, and some questions don’t need to have answers. It’s enough to simply be beautiful.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In southern parts of their range, white admiral butterflies are called red-spotted purple: there they lack white stripes and instead resemble toxic pipevine swallowtail butterflies, making them less appealing to predators. In Maine they have the stripes, which are thought to hide them from predators by breaking up their outline. They also tend to eat tree sap, rotting fruit, and dung, but do consume nectar from small white flowers like these clematis blossoms.</image:caption>
